Historic
IMG was established in 1994 at the initiative of UNHCR and with ECHO support as an ad-hoc technical group to address the specific technical and infrastructure problems faced in Bosnia and Herzegovina at the height of the conflict in this country.
At the request of its members the mandate of the Organisation has been extended both in terms of geographic and sector coverage.
Status
IMG is an International Organisation under international law, enjoying all privileges and immunities under international law.
Its Presidency is ensured by the Chairman of its Steering Committee which has comprised, at various times, the following members: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
IMG is headed by a General Manager who acts in the capacity of executive director and oversees the implementation of all activities carried out by the Organisation.
Mission
The mandate of IMG is to assist its members and the international community in its interventions in different geographic areas and sectors.
Supporting the international community, IMG provides technical expertise for beneficiary countries in crises, in post-war situations and in the transition and development process.
Fields of Activities and Interventions
IMG is currently operating on 4 continents. IMG intervenes all along the project cycle: identification, assessment, implementation and evaluation.
Its main areas of expertise have been developed through significant projects in infrastructure, water and sanitation, energy, rural development, SME development, education and governance, services, supply and works contracts, supervision, monitoring and evaluation.
Since 1994, IMG has directly managed almost 500 contracts with an approximate value of €560 million. Coupled with the projects IMG has identified, supervised or monitored, the total project volume is around €1.5 billion. These interventions have been mainly implemented either on behalf of IMG Member States or for the European Commission, notably through contribution agreements.
